As these authors ‘connect the dots’ and nudge political, commercial and environmental focus upon scientific solutions we can realize hope. History tells us this is truth and truth is how we will preserve history.

China rightfully sees it is a great power and part of that strategy is taking or creating islands (Or increasing their size by dredging) to have military bases to “legitimize” their territorial claims. Or simply, “We’re here, I dare you to remove us” situation.
China’s leadership has no internal pressure to do things that are good for the environment. If they do get some the leadership’s chances of long term survival are slim to none. China has it’s plans of domination and is going forward with them. All else be damned unless it causes too much internal instability for the “party” to stay in power.
The Chinese government is quite literally riding a harnessed “tiger” and can’t get off. If it turns on them the results are likely to be very nasty.
Also at the end of the day who or what might emerge as the most powerful force in China? A strong man (Who might be mad or deluded) who will do what?
Or worse chaos will reign for years and who knows what weapons will end up on the loose? Does China have hidden Biological weapons? If a virus gets loose that no vaccination exists for or a weaponized bacteria that is very resistant to antibiotics (Because it was made that way) and is airborne transmitted and gets released it could kill more than a billion if it spreads worldwide.
I always think of the bioweapon theft as the ultimate “Nightmare scenario” no matter where it comes from. The USSR had bioweapons and they haven’t been destroyed and China’s real status is unknown on that front too.
In the chaos of government collapse anywhere there are viruses or bacteria (Anthrax is limited in scope though a nasty weapon) that have been “tinkered with” to change them that if they are stolen they could fall into the hands of some unknown maniac.
I could see some group of fanatics choosing “martyrs” (some of whom don’t even know the mission they are on is they are infected) and sending them on trips from airport to airport and into the slums of cities to prostitutes or just talk and interact to infect as many as possible.
Once the cities reach the point where the water shuts off (Because of the chaos of an outbreak and the disorder) and people flood out infected or not to cause more chaos.
The disorder from a outbreak of something airborne and fatal will be worse the further it spreads than the disease itself.
China imploding because their government collapses is not a very happy scenario. Their population situation makes that a lot more likely than Russia dissolving into chaos.
