On October 10, 2024, the United States District Attorney of Puerto Rico charged 23 members of a local gang with drug trafficking and firearms offenses. Earlier in the year, 62 members of another Puerto Rican gang faced similar charges. The trend is reflective of a troubling rise in gang violence across the Caribbean. Haiti in particular has drawn attention of late for its surging levels of gang violence, where gangs openly challenge state authority, tightening their control over the Port-au-Prince area and beyond. Yet this escalating security crisis extends beyond Haiti; other Caribbean nations and territories—notably Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago—are also grappling with rising gang violence, driven in large part by rivalries among drug trafficking gangs.
