Key oil terminals in Libya recaptured by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA)

The Ras Lanuf and Sidra oil terminals in Libya’s northeast have reportedly been retaken by forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar. The terminals – a key income source for the Tobruk-based government – had fallen into rebel hands after a surprise offensive last week.

Fighting in Libya’s oil crescent is common as various armed groups vie for control of the country’s lucrative oil wealth. The Ras Lanuf and Sidra terminals are located on the coast around halfway between Sirte and Benghazi. They have frequently been fought over by rival groups, but Haftar’s government has maintained a semblance of control over them since a rash of violence broke out in mid-2017.
